Chestermere council scores a home run with new sportsplex.

October 7, 2009, Chestermere, Ab -. Construction plans are forging ahead on Chestermere's new multi-million dollar air-supported Sportsplex. The Town of Chestermere began negotiations with the Armourdome Sportsplex group earlier this year in an attempt to bring the one of a kind indoor sports complex, the Armourdome, to town. We are very excited and happy to say that those negotiations have been successful, says Mayor Patricia Matthews.

It's been a long term plan to create a multi-complex sports facility in Chestermere. The need and desire for a facility of this size have always been there, Matthews said.

"The importance of regular physical activity and exercise to maintain physical and mental health cannot be emphasised enough. Playing sport promotes a feeling of well being in yourself and teaches you how to work as a team. The new sportsplex will serve the growing population of Chestermere and help make the town and region a great place to live, work and raise a family." says Matthews.

The Chestermere Sportsplex is a new 540,000 square foot facility that will feature a CFL regulation football field, a FIFA regulation soccer pitch as well as four regular soccer pitches, four baseball diamonds, batting cages, a seventeen tee golf driving range, putting green, His N' Hers training rooms, restaurant, conference facility, meeting rooms, and 120,000 sq feet of retail outlets. All of this will be contained under one enormous air supported structure.

The Sportsplex is also designed to host concerts, trade shows, movies, and a wide variety of community events. The facility is expected to serve the growing population of Chestermere as well as visitors from Calgary, and the surrounding communities.

The Sportsplex is another example of the growth of Chestermere, and how this commercial component will complement existing recreational offerings such as the Lake, regional bike paths and an Olympic sized ice rink, while attracting users and visitors world-wide.

"This project was conceived six years ago" explains Ron Berreth, President of the Sportsplex. We are very pleased to be working with the community of Chestermere and Centron the developer of the new Eastside Development Plan."

Ian Harrison, CEO of the Sportsplex says "The group did a lot of homework in researching the local economic impact, the market potential and the general need for such a facility. We concluded that the local economy will benefit as sporting enthusiasts travel from local and regional areas to play in the various tournaments, or out-of-country visitors come to see Canada's largest air supported structure. This will help turn Chestermere into a destination location."

"We cannot say enough about what Chestermere has done for us," he says. "They have warmly welcomed us to the area and are diligently and enthusiastically working with us to ensure that we can open early next year.

Jesse Halmo, Director of Marketing for the Sportsplex, says sponsorships are still available, from larger deals such as naming rights down to signage deals on the fences.

"The new DOME will be one of the most visible and recognized properties in Western Canada, and so we envision a lot of national and local companies that will want to take advantage of the opportunities out there," Halmo says.

"It's been a rollercoaster ride for years," said Jared Berreth V.P. Operations, "but Chestermere is for us the logical choice. We're really hoping that this will be the premier site for baseball and soccer in the country. No other facility like this exists in Canada! We can see huge success happening for this business and can hardly wait for the door to open".

The Sportsplex is already luring other developments. The town is actively seeking two hotels, with at least one them having a swimming pool. Harrison says the sportsplex could bring between 15,000 to 20,000 people to the town every week, creating demand for the new restaurants and hotels. This will be a home run for future economic growth in Chestermere.
